ABOUT ELEANOR

Eleanor A. Smith

In 2021, I created an 11-week online Nonprofit Management Certificate Course at Sonoma State University. Each Spring and Fall, I coordinate and teach the course on Zoom, partnering with experienced nonprofit professionals who offer best practices, insights and stories from their long careers.

Personal Experience Informs My Coaching…

Many years ago, I hit a wall in my career. For a decade and a half, I’d been working days, nights and weekends because I thought that’s what I had to do. Suddenly I had a disabling medical condition — the tangible result of my overwork. Because I was my own boss, I was forced to confront how my beliefs, attitudes and habits had hurt me. It was tough but I slowly began to prioritize self-care. If I hadn’t learned that lesson, I likely would not have been able to keep working or even enjoy life.

Today, my coaching clients – leaders and staff of mission-driven nonprofit and philanthropic organizations – tell me about their work pressures. Despite their relentless routines, many say they can never catch up. They’re losing sleep, feeling overwhelmed and concerned about burnout.
