Essential EQ for Today’s Nonprofit Leaders
Today’s nonprofit leaders have a tough job.
Not only do they need expertise in different functional areas, they must adapt to changes in the role itself. Rigid hierarchies — topped by authoritarian command-and-control leaders — are giving way to flatter more democratic workplaces.
Workers today demand their nonprofit leaders have such essential emotional intelligence (EQ) qualities as self-awareness and compassion and EQ skills including active listening and staying calm under pressure.,
Leaders must also take care of themselves and their teams to avoid the devastating impacts of all-too-common burnout. When they suffer the debilitating physical and emotional problems from burnout, nonprofits leaders and workers often quit to recover. Burnout also affects nonprofits’ bottom line and mission effectiveness.
This 2-part workshop focuses on developing the essential EQ skills of nonprofit leadership and ways to recognize and avoid burnout for both leaders & their staff

For 14 years, I taught nonprofit management and leadership courses at San Francisco State University and Cal State East Bay. In 2021, I founded, managed and taught classes in Sonoma State’s widely acclaimed Nonprofit Management Certificate Course.
To address the serious problem of workplace burnout, I’ve led sessions on Preventing Burnout for Tri-Valley Nonprofit Alliance, Association of Fundraising Professionals, American Institute of Architects, Oakland Rotary and California Animal Welfare Association.
I’ve also spoken at conferences and taught public & private workshops on a wide range of nonprofit leadership topics for over 20 years.
